Weekly Food Scraps & Compostables
Collection Service in the Quaker Valley
The Program
With the support of Sustainable Sewickley, our Kickstarter campaign exceeded its funding goal on May 13th, 2021. More than 90 individuals signed up to support and participate in curbside weekly food scraps collection and composting in 5 gallon buckets! All the costs of collection, transportation and processing for one year were included in this campaign for those eligible and willing. We started collection in July and continue to recruit customers in Glen Osborne, Sewickley, Egdeworth, Ben Avon, Ben Avon Heights and Emsworth while looking for ways to expand and improve our service.
The Problem
Food scraps and expired food are a fact of life. When they are sent to the landfill they are, at best, trapped with a mix of toxic and non-recyclable trash for decades. At worst, they break down and release methane into the atmosphere which is a potent greenhouse gas. (Photo credit Waste Today Magazine)
